Robert Horonjeff Award

On April 25, 2012, the Robert Horonjeff Award was presented to the FAA National Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF). The Horonjeff Award recognizes a person, persons or organization for outstanding achievement in or contributions to the advancement of the field of air transportation engineering. The NAPTF is a full-scale accelerated pavement testing facility dedicated solely to airport pavement research. Since beginning operations in 1999 and continuing today, the research performed at the NAPTF has revolutionized airfield pavement design. The Horonjeff Award was presented to honor and recognize the NAPTF for outstanding contributions to the advancement of civil engineering of economical and durable aircraft pavements, which are compatible with the aircraft of today and tomorrow. NAPTF research has advanced pavement design from the use of empirical charts to powerful mechanistic design based computer programs. Scott Murrell, MASCE, Roadway Council Chair presented the award to Dr. Wilson N. Felder, Director of the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center and Dr. Satish Agrawal, Manager Airport Technology Research and Development Branch of the Technical Center during the FAA Airport Pavement Working Group Meeting held in Atlantic City, NJ.

NYC's Grand Central Terminal recognized as a civil engineering marvel

The American Society of Civil Engineers has placed New York City's Grand Central Terminal on its list of National Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks. The terminal's pioneering concept of selling "air rights" and a design that eliminated crowding problems common in other railway stations are some of the reasons for its landmark designation. The terminal "represents a triumph in civil engineering," said Andrew Herrmann, ASCE's president, "a fact that goes unnoticed because much of the engineering work that went into the design and construction of the terminal is largely hidden from public view." 8th National Aviation System Planning Symposium

The Eighth National Aviation System Planning Symposium will be held May 20 to 22, 2012 at the historic Hotel Galvez in Galveston, Texas on the Gulf coast. The symposium is being organized by the Transportation Research Board Committee on Aviation System Planning with the support of the Texas Transportation Institute and will provide a forum for the broad range of stakeholders involved in planning the future aviation system to explore the challenges and opportunities of the remainder of this decade and beyond.
Building on the success of the last National Aviation System Planning Symposium held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California in May 2009, the symposium will examine recent trends and developments affecting aviation system planning, present the results of recent Airport Cooperative Research Program studies relevant to aviation system planning, and discuss future policy, funding and research needs to strengthen the aviation system planning process.
For more information on the symposium visit: http://www.2012NASPS.org. Note that Early Bird registration closed April 20, 2012. Accommodation reservations at the Hotel Galvez should be made by April 24 to be sure of room availability.

Guide for Participation In the 2012 ASCE-LTPP International Contest on LTPP Data Analysis

The “International Contest on LTPP Data Analysis” is a joint effort between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) Program, and theTask Committee on Long-Term Pavement Performance Contest, a subcommittee of the Highway Pavement Committee of the Transportation and Development Institute (T&DI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).  The contest was initiated in August 1998 and is designed to encourage students, professors, State Highway Officials, and consultants from around the world to get involved in using the LTPP data compiled by the FHWA over the past 17 years.  The database offers a unique opportunity for everyone to work, individually or in teams, in the development of papers, which will benefit transportation engineers and which will be considered for awards.  All participants receive letters of recognition.  Winners receive cash prizes, plaques, and certificates as per the recognition awards described in this guide.  FHWA will reserve the right to publish the winning papers in an LTPP research document, which will be available for free to anyone who desires a copy. Visit here for more information.

T&DI COMMITTEE REPORT

The T&DI Infrastructure Systems Committee Activity Report

The Infrastructure Systems Committee (ISC) under the Mode Spanning Council of T&DI had a busy and productive year. In addition to its annual committee meeting in January at TRB, ISC conducted its monthly leadership teleconferences to discuss committee business and held its quarterly virtual committee meeting to keep committee members informed of the committee’s activities. In the past year, ISC had sponsored and/or supported a series of workshops, symposiums, and conferences, including the 7th Annual Interuniversity Symposium on Infrastructure Management (AISIM7) in Evanston, IL in June 2011, the 10th Infrastructure Management Research and Education (IMRE) Workshop at TRB in January 2012, the organization of the Second Advance Infrastructure Management Boot Camp to be held at Georgia Tech in June 2012, and the organization of the 9th Asian-Pacific Transportation Conference to be held in June 2012.
